These paintings are made
with intent. As I am painting them I focus intensely on
imparting them with a specific good intention.
There is a history behind charm paintings. A few years ago
a friend told me about two dangerous incidents that
happened to her. Sometime soon thereafter she wanted one of
my small flower paintings. It occurred to me to paint
something into the work that would be a protection for her,
a talisman if you will. A while later my niece told me that
she was being plagued by bad dreams. Something clicked.
“You need a charm!” I said. She and I share a love of
plants, fruits and vegetables. Every time I visit, I bring
her favorite: mangoes. So it was natural to paint a mango
for her.
When people heard about the charms, the orders started
coming in. People choose their favorite fruit or vegetable
and sometimes even the background color. Some examples: a
kiwi for control around eating; an artichoke for help to
stop smoking; strawberries to help cope with a serious
illness; a pear, a peace, and an avocado to help find
sweethearts; a pomegranate to help attain enlightenment;
and cherries for general well-being.
These paintings are meant to be placed in the home in a
spot which feels comfortable and where the person can
relate to them often. Of course there are no guarantees
with charms; I like to think of them as visual prayers. I
figure that it must be a good thing to make a painting for
someone while putting only good intentions into it.
